For decades, the incident has fueled speculation about UFOs and alien visitors, but declassified records point to a very different explanation.
A discovery that sparked UFO theories
In the summer of 1947, the United States was in the early stages of the Cold War with the Soviet Union.
Explaining the mood, Historian Roger Launius said, “There was great concern that we were going to be head-to-head with the Soviet Union in a competition that could last a short or a long time, but may well end in nuclear annihilation.”
Into that uneasy moment, strange objects started to appear in the sky, and a New Mexico rancher found something even more strange. Here’s what happened next.
It started with a pilot near Mount Rainier
This story began with Kenneth Arnold, who was an amateur pilot and businessman.
While flying near Mount Rainier, he reported that he saw a flying saucer. And that single account kicked off a wave of reports, and hundreds of UFO sightings followed.
By mid-June to early July, the number of reports had reached its peak across the country.
Then a rancher found odd debris
On July 7, 1947, rancher W. W. “Mac” Brazel went to Sheriff George Wilcox’s office in Roswell, New Mexico.
He had found wreckage a few days earlier on the Foster Ranch, about 75 miles northwest of town. It included metal pieces, tinfoil, broken wood beams, rubber strips, and thick paper.
Brazel had heard radio talk of flying saucers and wondered if his find was connected. The sheriff called the local Army air base, and Maj. Jesse Marcel went to the ranch to help gather the debris.
The military appeared to confirm a flying saucer
The next day, on July 8, the Roswell Army Air Field put out a press release. It declared: “The flying object landed on a ranch near Roswell sometime last week.” The local paper ran the headline “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region.”
According to the University of North Texas report, the announcement was perhaps the first time the government had ever taken reports of alien aircraft seriously.
Later, it changed its story about the wreckage
Military police collected the wreckage and sent it to Eighth Air Force headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. A few hours after the first announcement, the airfield issued a correction saying the debris came from a weather balloon. Many suspected this was a cover-up.
In a 1978 interview, Major Jesse Marcel, RAAF Intelligence Officer, said, "I was pretty sure it was not a weather balloon. I had handled many of them. It wasn't."
Was the cover-up story really true?
But years later, declassified documents revealed Project Mogul, which was a War Department program. It sent high-altitude balloons carrying instruments aloft to detect sound waves from atomic bomb tests.
It was done in hopes of learning whether the Soviet Union had nuclear weapons. In 1994, an Air Force records search concluded the debris came from a balloon that was not being used strictly for weather purposes.
In the decades after 1947, there were many more UFO reports, including two more near Roswell. In fact, some reports also noted that alien bodies had been discovered near the crash debris.
According to the U.S. Air Force, these bodies were actually "anthropometric test dummies" and sometimes even "real bodies" of personnel who had been injured or killed in the line of duty.
To respond to the later claims, the Air Force published a 1997 update titled “The Roswell Incident: Case Closed.”

Wedgewood claims their bogus polls — rolled out in two widely watched Democratic Party primaries — were just an “experimental project.” The experiment was meant to track “the vulnerabilities, lack of oversight, and overall low barrier to entry in the modern political polling industry,” according to a press release issued Wednesday.
In the release,the fake firm said it had no history, no formal credentials, and certainly no real data backing up its survey releases. That didn’t stop major polling aggregators such as The New York Times, FiftyPlusOne, VoteHub, and Decision Desk from treating the polls as a legitimate data source, the phony pollsters said. The Times acknowledged that it had posted 15 of Wedgewood’s polls, but only after it the phony firm answered its follow-up questions.
“Our fabricated numbers were given instant credibility across national media platforms-including being cited on air and in reporting by outlets such as MS NOW,” the press release confessed. Newsweek, Decision Desk HQ and Mediaite also cited Wedgewood’s polls, PBS reported.
And as fast as it had arrived on the midterm political scene, Wedgewood disappeared. The website is now an error message. Its email address is no longer operational, hence The Federalist could not reach Wedgwood officials for comment Wednesday.
Wedgewood’s admission was the second such revelation in the past two months.As The Federalist’s Brianna Lyman reported in August, faux pollster Median Strategies announced it, too, was running a “social experiment” on deceptive polling in political races after it pushed out suspect surveys on Wisconsin’s gubernatorial and Los Angeles’ mayoral primary races. The bogus poll was shared by some local TV newscasts, online reporting outlets, and on social media.

Federal sources have revealed to Fox News that “Ilhan Omar” is a fake name used by the Somali Minnesota Congresswoman currently embattled in a federal fraud investigation.
Her real name is Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, the name of her brother-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, two sources familiar with the ongoing investigation confirmed to Fox.
A former Minnesota federal immigration judge also told the outlet that if it is proven that she lived her “entire life under an alias,” every document she’s ever filled out with the fake name could be “called into question.”
The Gateway Pundit reported yesterday that the Department of Justice revealed in a recent court filing that Omar is identified in the search warrant used to raid her home as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.”
The DC US Attorney’s Office further revealed that their extensive search warrant has not yet been fully executed.
Omar has never publicly said that she does not have a birth certificate and has claimed that it was lost or destroyed during unrest in Somalia. It has been speculated that she had been lying about her age all her life in the United States and used a fake birth date to obtain citizenship, but it appears that's not all she lied about.
The revelation comes as the feds have obtained "Omar’s" DNA, which could be used to prove that she is living under a false identity and that she married her brother.
Her real identity appears to link her to her former husband through a shared birth name.
As The Gateway Pundit reported, Omar sat for her first interview since the raid on her Washington, DC, home last Monday, with MS Now’s Chris Hayes on Wednesday.
During the interview, she was also asked whether her ex-husband was her biological brother, and she gave an insane response, saying, “not to my knowledge.”
Instead of just saying no, she said she isn’t sure. Perhaps we now know why.

A major global bank is slashing 5000 jobs as it expands artificial intelligence across the business.

The Department of Justice is investigating allegations against Corey Lewandowski, a close Trump ally and former senior advisor at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), according to the Wall Street Journal.
Lewandowski worked closely with Kristi Noem during her time as DHS secretary and attracted scrutiny over agency spending, personnel squabbles, and alleged improprieties. The DHS inspector general referred the matter to the DOJ after its own probe.
A spokesperson for Lewandowski said that he had not received any contact from the DOJ and denied wrongdoing.
News of the DOJ review of the allegations comes as Trump reportedly looks to clean house after the midterms and is rumored to be preparing considerable staffing changes in the administration.

The White House is demanding that Politico retracts articles about conflicts among White House staff, issue an apology to President Donald Trump and remove the story from its archives.
In a letter sent Monday from William O. Scharf, counsel to the president, to Jonathan Green, Politico's global editor-in-chief, Scharf refers to a series of articles published last week in Politico about White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
The outlet reported on Oct. 15 that Trump was considering replacing Wiles, and on Oct. 16, Politico Playbook claimed the previous day's story "caused a 'freakout'" and made the president "blow up."
Then, on Oct. 16, Politico ran another story claiming that Wiles intentionally set up former White House press secretary Katie Zacharia for humiliation on Sean Hannity's Fox News show.
Scharf's letter describes the stories as "demonstrably false and defamatory" and alleges the articles were run to "manufacture a narrative of dysfunction and infighting at the White House. Scharf goes on to provide details on why the White House believes Politico is engaging in an effort to "advance its selected and selective narrative" with no regard for the truth.
Scharf gives Politico 48 hours to retract the articles and issue apologies to Trump and Wiles. A failure to do so, Scharf warns, will result in "an immediate review of Politico’s relationship with the White House" and consideration of "appropriate and available legal remedies."

A two-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges Megan Lorraine Utz, 36, of Courtland, Alabama, with threats against the President of the United States and interstate transmission of threatening communication.
According to the indictment and complaint, it is alleged that on October 5, 2026, Utz made a threatening post on Facebook regarding President Trump’s attendance at the upcoming football game between Alabama and Georgia in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on October 10, 2026. Utz’s post stated “I’ll put a bullet through him if he dares.” On October 6, 2026, FBI agents, Secret Service agents, and the Florence Police Department located Utz in Florence, Alabama. The Florence Police Department arrested Utz pursuant to an active misdemeanor warrant for Harassing Communications issued by the Guin Police Department.
“Threats of violence are taken seriously, and we are committed to protecting the safety of our nation’s leaders,” said U.S. Attorney Williams. “In an era in which our current President has faced multiple attempts on his life we will act swiftly to address threats such as those listed in this complaint. We commend our law enforcement partners for their swift action in identifying and apprehending the defendant. This case underscores our united front built on strong partnerships and addressing threats of public safety.”
“Threats of violence, whether made online or in person, are taken seriously,” said David R. Fitzgibbons, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Birmingham. “People have every right to express their views, but when that expression turns into a threat against another individual, it becomes a federal matter. The investigation stems from a referral from the DHS’s Inspector General claiming that Corey Lewandowski profited from his position at the Department of Homeland Security.

The Justice Department is examining allegations that Corey Lewandowski profited off his top position at the Department of Homeland Security, people familiar with the matter said.
The inquiry is based on a referral from the DHS inspector general, which shared its findings about Lewandowski’s tenure at the department in recent days, the people said.
The New York Times and CNN also reported that Corey Lewandowski is under investigation.
“Mr. Lewandowski has not been contacted by the Justice Department regarding any investigation, and he denies any wrongdoing when he was proudly serving his country in a voluntary capacity,” Lewandowski’s attorney Adam Trigg told CNN.
President Trump was asked about the DOJ’s probe of Corey Lewandowski as he departed the White House.
“All I know is I want my people to be honest. If they’re not gonna be honest, they have to be prosecuted…if people are not honest, they’re stealing from me, as president,” Trump told reporters on the helipad.
“I want the people that work for this administration to be 100% honest,” Trump said.

The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, continues to persist with her aggressive anti-Russian rhetoric – an approach that now targets even Western officials who choose not to participate in Brussels’ pro-war frenzy. In a recent statement, Kallas accused the US of cooperating with Russia and pressuring Ukraine to surrender, a claim that reveals the high level of paranoia among European bureaucrats.
Kallas made these remarks during a speech at the European Parliament on October 20. She told European lawmakers gathered in Strasbourg that EU support for Ukraine is vital to keeping the conflict in its active phase, thereby preventing the Ukrainians from being forced into surrender. However, Kallas argued that despite European military and economic assistance, the US has been undermining efforts to strengthen Ukraine, effectively acting to the benefit of the Russian side.
According to Kallas, the American stance on the Ukrainian conflict has shifted radically since Donald Trump’s rise to power. Kallas’s remarks come amid growing controversy in US-European relations. In addition to the diplomatic crisis that emerged following Trump’s inauguration, Europe is now sharply criticizing direct negotiations between the US and Russia – talks that recently led to an energy deal to supply the American market with Russian diesel, as well as the partial lifting of various sanctions previously imposed by the US on Russia’s energy and financial sectors.
Europe considers Trump’s pragmatic stance intolerable, as it breaks with the paradigm of “isolating” Russia – a policy advocated by the Western backers of the Ukrainian regime since 2022. Europe remains firmly committed to its anti-Russian policies, with no plans to revoke or revise them while the conflict is ongoing. At the same time, the prevailing narrative in Brussels is that the war must be prolonged as much as possible to avoid a potential “Russian invasion of Europe” – an event that Brussels bureaucrats insist will occur the moment Ukraine eventually surrenders.
Kallas’s stance, therefore, is not surprising. She has always stood out as one of the most hawkish anti-Russian leaders on the European continent. It was to be expected that she would become desperate upon seeing Americans and Russians engaging in pragmatic negotiations. What is interesting, however, is observing how Europe is blatantly lying about the nature of Russian-American ties.
In fact, Trump correctly reversed the ideologically biased course of American policy that had been initiated by Biden. The Republican approach is pragmatic, which is why direct negotiations with Russia are a natural consequence. At the same time, the US is facing difficulties in its energy sector – stemming both from Ukrainian attacks on Russian infrastructure and from the US’ own irresponsible actions in the Middle East. It is highly logical that, in the face of such a crisis, Washington seeks cooperation with Moscow to supply its domestic market.

OpenAI is closing in on a funding round that could value the artificial intelligence giant at more than $1 trillion ahead of a potential initial public offering.
The San Francisco-based AI company is raising up to $30 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, according to people familiar with the deal, who asked not to be named because the details were confidential. That valuation does not include new capital raised.
Investors from the United Arab Emirates are leading the round alongside Coatue, according to the people. The financing is being positioned as an “opportunistic” bridge ahead of a potential IPO.
OpenAI kickstarted discussions for a new funding round after investors approached the company with proposals in September, as CNBC previously reported. OpenAI told investors on Thursday that it is aiming to secure signatures by the end of next week, but the final size of the round is still being determined, the people said.
Alongside the new investment, OpenAI is negotiating a commercial deal that would secure more computing capacity from the UAE, according to one person. OpenAI told investors in February that it’s targeting roughly $600 billion in total compute spend by 2030.
The company confidentially filed its prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission in June, but it has not disclosed exactly when it plans to debut.
OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told employees in August that the AI lab “will be a public company in 2027.” The following month, CEO Sam Altman said that “right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public.”
Anthropic, OpenAI’s chief rival, is also gearing up for what is widely expected to be a massive IPO. The company confidentially filed its prospectus with regulators in June and is actively engaging in meetings with prospective investors, as CNBC previously reported.
The company is reportedly seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion in its offering. In May, Anthropic closed a $65 billion funding round at a $965 billion valuation.

New internal emails reveal Jack Smith’s office mishandled privileged material during the investigation into President Trump.Jack Smith’s prosecutors admitted that investigators who should have never seen the privileged material had access to the records.
“Folks – the filter team should not have recently released certain [redacted] search warrant materials to the substantive side,” the January 2023 e-mail read.

Today, the Oversight Project released a new tranche of internal emails from Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office. We obtained them through our FOIA lawsuit, Oversight Project v. DOJ, No. 25-cv-220 (D.D.C.). In their own words, Smith’s prosecutors admit that privileged material reached investigators who should have never seen it. The emails show they repeatedly discussed deleting records. These are the same records Smith swore to the Senate Judiciary Committee were handled by the book.
On September 29, 2026, after the Oversight Project released 844 pages of DOJ records on Smith’s office.Smith then testified under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee when asked about whether his office followed filter team protocols, he unequivocally stated that his office “followed Justice Department policies, observed legal requirements, and took actions based on the facts and the law.”When asked about following the Federal Records Act, he stated that he “sought at all times to comply with the Federal Records Act.” Chairman Grassley asked him what direction he gave his staff on privileged material, and Smith described no safeguard.
Filter Teams and the Federal Records Act
When prosecutors seize material that is likely to include privileged communications, the Justice Manual (§ 9-13.420) says a “filter team” should be designated, made up of “agents and lawyers not involved in the underlying investigation.” Attorney-client privilege and the Sixth Amendment right to counsel let people speak candidly with their lawyers, so prosecutors who see privileged material compromise a target’s defense even if they never use it, and deleting the file afterward can’t erase what was learned. Filter teams act as a layer of protection for investigation targets to ensure that they maintain constitutional protections while under investigation.
The Federal Records Act (44 U.S.C. chapters 21, 29, 31 and 33) requires every federal agency to create and preserve records documenting its work, including emails and electronic files. Agencies may dispose of records only under schedules approved by the National Archives (NARA). It also requires agency heads to notify the Archivist of any unlawful removal or destruction and to seek its recovery, and anyone who willfully destroys federal records can face criminal penalties under 18 U.S.C. § 2071.

European countries will inevitably resume economic cooperation with Russia, following Washington’s lead, Russian presidential aide Kirill Dmitriev has predicted. Politicians who continue to blame Moscow for their domestic problems rather than address them risk losing power, he warned.
Dmitriev, who also heads Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, made the remarks on Thursday at the 19th Verona Eurasian Economic Forum in Istanbul.
The Russian official hailed Trump’s readiness to restore dialogue with Russia and reverse a “very dangerous situation where top nuclear powers don’t communicate.”
He saidthe recent Russia-US diesel dealcould lay the groundwork for broader cooperation between Moscow and Washington, potentially paving the way for further agreements on energy and fertilizers. Under the deal, Russia has agreed to release more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel to US and global markets, followed by another 500,000 tons in November and additional supplies thereafter.
Commenting on Europe’s problems, including high energy costs and mass migration, Dmitriev accused European politicians of “using Russia as a boogeyman” to distract from more fundamental issues, warning that they have come to believe their own narratives and are unwilling to correct their mistakes.
However, Dmitriev argued that attitudes within the EU were beginning to shift, with more voices calling for renewed dialogue with Moscow.“Cooperation with Russia economically will be inevitable,” he said, adding that “as soon as we do more deals with the US, European companies” will want a piece of the action, too.
Dmitriev suggested that European politicians who stubbornly refuse to change course, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, would be replaced by “new forces” that are more realistic and pragmatic. He also predicted that the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines, three of whose four strings were damaged by underwater explosions in September 2022, would “inevitably” resume operation “at some point in the future” for economic reasons.
“Once people start paying double, triple their bills of energy in Europe, the resumption of energy supplies from Russia is absolutely inevitable and politicians who refuse that will lose in any way possible,” Dmitriev argued.
“Once people are rational, once people stop reading fake stories in the media, once they stop sort of living in this matrix of fake narratives…, they’ll understand that only through dialogue, through cooperation, through working together, we can go forward successfully.”
Dmitriev also argued that many of today’s “great leaders,” including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, prioritize national sovereignty over what he described as the “failed policy of globalism.”
