The Megiddo Mosaic was removed from its original site inside the Megiddo Prison by Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) conservators using a highly precise, specialized engineering and archaeological extraction method.
The step-by-step process used to lift and pack the 20x30-foot artifact for its flight overseas included:
• Sectioning: Conservators meticulously cut the massive mosaic floor—which is comprised of hundreds of thousands of individual stone tesserae—into more than 10 rectangular sections to preserve the core integrity of the unique inscriptions and geometric designs.
• Top-surface binding: A specialized, sticky fabric adhesive was applied directly to the top surface of each section to anchor the thousands of tiny stones firmly in place and prevent them from shifting.
• Chiseling and lifting: Workers carefully chiseled away the ancient mortar bedding beneath the stones, separating the floor from the ground. Each detached section was then carefully lifted, flipped over, and cleaned.
• Packing and crating: The stabilized sections were packed into massive, secure wooden shipping crates, loaded onto flatbed trucks, and driven to Tel Aviv before flying overseas to the Museum of the Bible in Washington D.C., where they were stitched back together by conservators.
